How do hydroponic systems work?

Hydroponics is designed to grow plants without soil. This technology is based on the external fertilization of minerals added to the water that is distributed internally to reach every root, saving time and effort.

What do I need to know prior to growing with hydroponic systems?

There are 3 things you should know right now: it demands electricity, direct sunlight or growing lighting, a wall for vertical kits, or a leveled floor for standing kits. After this, it’s time to identify the right system for you and the plants you’re planning on growing.

Take a look at this video and reach out to our team if you need more guidance. Everything else can be learned easily through the system’s guides and the resources we’ll share on our blog.

How much time should I dedicate to the maintenance of my system?

Much less than in traditional gardening! You’ll spend around 5 to 15 minutes weekly filling the water tank, adding fertilizer, and monitoring the water’s PH. And if you don’t want the hassle of filling the water tank, we also have systems with an auto-fill mechanism.

Does my system need sun?

Your system will work perfectly without sun, but your plants need it. Leafy greens need from 2 to 5 hours of direct sunlight, and fruit vegetables need more than 5 hours daily. You can also use professional growing lighting if there's not enough sun.

Is it risky to work with water & electricity so closely?

Safety is first! Our hydroponic systems are carefully designed to avoid these types of issues. All the hydroponic kits contain only DC 12V-18V water pumps that are not dangerous even if the pump is damaged. We made sure the mixing of electricity and water won't be unsafe, especially because this is a product for the whole family.

Will the plant roots clog the system?

Roots will definitely grow, but you can prevent the system’s clogging by choosing the right model for the type of plants you want to grow. For example, if you’d like to grow plants with long roots, like tomatoes or pumpkins, choose a system with a bigger space for roots, like Tobato 5

Our kits have removable growing tube lids to enable users to cut the roots easily without harming them. If your plants have long roots, you’ll have to cut them every 3 or 4 weeks.

Are there plants I cannot grow in my hydroponic system?

Yes, root vegetables and trees cannot be grown in these systems. Each one of the kits is designed to help you grow certain plants. For example:

Airponic Fruit: fruits and vegetables.

Tobato 5: tomatoes, herbs and other large fruit & vegetable plants.

Homie 28: herbs and leafy vegetables.

Wally 32: large fruits & vegetables like eggplant, pepper, cucumber, zucchini and watermelon.

What’s the best hydroponic system for me?

You can look at our hydroponic kits to choose the features that better suit your needs. If you have any questions or doubts, our team will be happy to help!

Would plants attract insects to my home?

Overall, there are fewer chances of pests around your plants if you use hydroponic kits. They will not attract insects as long as all the holes are shut to keep mosquitos away from the water. You’ll also avoid the presence of insects that are regularly in the soil.

Do hydroponic vegetables taste different? (better, worse)

Studies say they do taste different and customers agree (some of them say they like hydroponic vegetables most). We haven’t researched it yet.

Is hydroponic gardening more expensive than traditional gardening?

Hydroponics helps you spend less money on chemical spraying and buying vegetables in the supermarket. You’ll also ensure it’s healthier and fresher, and you’ll save time, effort, and resources. The process is much easier, more effective, and faster than traditional growing. The ROI is relatively fast, depending on how you use your system.

Are the plants susceptible to waterborne diseases?

Yes, but it’s easier to prevent and cure. To reduce the chances of waterborne diseases, the water should be kept under these conditions: 16-26 celsius, PH of 5.5-65 and EC that is leveled according to the plants' needs.

If your plants are already infected, you can pour hydrogen peroxide in the right concentration to kill all bacteria, according to the guide that comes with your system.

How much will my electricity bill increase?

It will depend on the hydroponic kit you choose, the number of crops you are growing and the extra elements you plan to add to your system. In the basic kit, without lighting or heaters, the water pump of 18V consumes only 8W per hour. The Wally lighting system consumes 140W per hour of work, and it’s used for 10-12 hours on average.

Isn’t hydroponics a walkaround nature? It sounds like manipulating nature to me.

Hydroponics empowers people to leverage urban spaces for growing their own food, without harming the environment. Agriculture is one of the most polluting industries in the world, so this alternative is a smart and sustainable way to grow your vegetables.
